E-Magine Entertainment is a record label that brings good music to the web. Discover new music, get the latest artist news and tour dates.

E-Magine Music is a New York City-based independent record label owned by businessman Christoph Rücker. The label, which has been around since early 2000, specializes in electronica and rock. The biggest band in their stable is the heavy metal legends, Danzig. Other acts on the E-Magine label include the dance group Alcazar, DJ? Acucrack, and MC Jah Jah. The company also releases classical musical using the brands "The Sound Of..." and "Operatica."

The name "E-Magine" is quite appropriate for a record label as the term relates to music on three different levels.

First and foremost, the name reminds music fans of one of the greatest pop songs of the 20th century, John Lennon's "Imagine." It's similar to the way the word "blitz" conjures up images of professional football or the mere mention of cities like Paris and Milan bring to mind the runways of haute couture. Thanks to Lennon, when we hear the word "imagine" we think of music.

The second connection is of course the actual meaning of the word "imagine." Quite simply, the artist needs to "imagine" his music, or to put it another way, the artist needs to use her imagination when composing and performing. They need to "imagine" beats that have never been heard, riffs that have never been played, and melodies that have never been recorded. The better the artist's "imagination" the better their music sounds.

Finally, we come to the "E" in "E-Magine." This "E," like in the word "email," stands for electronic. It not only refers to the "electric" guitar used by Reeves Gabrels (another E-Magine Music signee) but also digital music (much like an email is digital). Artists under the Emagine umbrella that dabble in digital music include Jay-Jay Johanson, Waldeck, and Alcazar.

Sounds produced by the electric guitar resonate with music fans. It speaks to the listener on a personal level; one they can relate too. The electric guitar's tone is familiar, comfortable, and accessible.

The digital beeps and pops produced by synthesizers and sequencers may at first seem aloof, and impersonal. But these artificial noises do more than just beckon us to the dance floor or remind us of campy science fiction films. They force us to use our imagination—to access the far recesses of our mind—to interpret their complex waveforms and dissect their musical algorithms.

In many ways digital music, or the use of digital instruments, is far more intimate than other forms of music. The motifs and timbres of familiar instruments are so well known that their message is instantly understood. They seldom challenge the listener. However, the digital sharps and flats, the microchip's notes and chords, force us to create our own unique analysis. The do challenge the listener.

As you can see the term "E-Magine Music" is full of meaning. It's associated with one of pop music's most famous songs, it highlights the artists' cognitive abilities to create, and it explores the fascinating aspects of digital music. If you think about it, there aren't too many better names for a record label than E-Magine. Read our take on music and humor.
